VOLVO PENTA TWIN TURBO REPAIR – BACK ON THE WATER

THE CLIENT:

Ron Hall is the owner of a boat powered by a 2003 Volvo Penta KAMD300A twin-turbo diesel engine. Like many boat owners, Ron relies on his vessel to provide dependable performance and peace of mind while out on the water. After discovering that both turbochargers had suffered from severe corrosion, he urgently required a specialist repair solution to restore the performance and reliability of his engine.

THE CHALLENGE:

Following an inspection of the engine, it was discovered that the exhaust elbow had suffered severe corrosion, preventing the turbocharger and supercharger from operating together efficiently. As the turbocharger’s performance deteriorated, the supercharger was forced to work significantly harder to compensate, placing additional strain on the engine. In marine environments, prolonged exposure to salt water can contribute to corrosion over time, making this a common issue for boat owners. The result is often reduced engine power, excessive exhaust smoke and poor engine performance due to an incorrect air-fuel mixture. Ron needed a specialist repair to restore the engine’s reliability and get his boat back on the water.

WHAT WE DID:

To restore the turbochargers, replacement exhaust housings were sourced and fitted with bespoke marine-grade stainless steel sleeves. Each sleeve was precision reprofiled to provide an exact fit within the turbocharger, offering superior resistance to saline corrosion and greater longevity than many manufacturer-supplied units. The turbochargers were supplied on an exchange basis, fully rebuilt and refinished in the original Volvo Penta green to maintain a factory-quality appearance. New studs and nuts were also supplied, ensuring the rebuilt turbochargers not only performed exceptionally but also reflected the pride Ron takes in maintaining his boat.

THE RESULTS:

Following completion of the repairs, Ron collected the fully refurbished turbochargers, rebuilt with multiple brand-new components and ready for installation. The turbochargers were supplied with a 12-month warranty with unlimited operating hours, providing additional peace of mind. With the engine restored to full performance, Ron was able to get his boat back up and running quickly, enabling it to be moved so that further work on the vessel could be completed.
